Chapter 21

Remember how I said that the silence between Aris and I wasn’t awkward? Now it was. Extremely.

She kept giving me disappointed looks as we collected the charcoal to be used later. A random passerby might see nothing but a blank face, but I could tell, I think. Or maybe that was my own guilt weighing on me. I will definitely give you sharp weapons that you can stab people with later, so can you please stop giving me that look?

Just as I was hoping for someone to come break through the awkwardness, something strange ran by in the distance.

It was a black lizard.

“Is that Brukus? He seems to be having fun,” I said. Mighty the horny lizard was galloping at full speed while a fishing line was tied around his neck, dragging the poor Brukus across the sand behind him. As they ran around in circles, Moss chased after them, along with a couple other master baiters. “I guess I better go help them.”

Aris didn't say anything, but just as I got up, she grabbed my arm.

“What is it? Is it about the charcoal and everything else? I'll come back and help you put it away later.”

“Not that.” She shook her head, indicating that she could do the cleanup herself.

“Then what?”

She took out her spear again.

“Um, I don't think I have time to see another....”

Before I could finish, Aris started doing her spear techniques again, but it was somehow different this time. Her swings cut down through the black sand more often, and the demonstration took less time. In the end, I realized she had drawn something in the sand.

It was a heart.

I stared at the heart, then up to her, then back down to the heart, then up to her again. Aris blushed, but she didn't turn away. Her eyes stared unflinchingly at me. I think this was her way of showing me her courage.

I smiled. She saw that and broke eye contact, then got down to clean up our mess. It was her way of telling me “go away, I'm busy”. I noticed that she didn’t try to clean away the drawn heart.

I ran off, grinning.

When I finally reached where Brukus was, the master baiters had already caught up and casted out their fishing lines to hold Mighty down.

“Need any help?” I said.

“No.” Brukus got off the ground and puked out some sand.

“I keep telling him we're going to need a woman's touch for this,” Moss said. He’d been there when Chief Rick had originally tamed Pineapple, and had learned every step of the way. Chief Rick's methods were nice and all, but in the end it was the women who managed to calm the beast down.

“You should listen to Moss. This species are big perverts,” I said, then looked around. “Speaking of perverted lizards, where is Pineapple?”

I spotted him in the distance. He was lying down, watching the taming like it was a funny show while surrounded by women feeding him fruits and vegetables. Every so often he would rub his green nose against one of their breasts, and that woman would giggle.
